A train ride from Darlington to Middlesbrough

A Journey from the East Coast Mainline through Teeside using part of the worlds first public railway the Stockton to Darlington Railway

This is roughly half hourly service through the day with a reduced service in the evenings some trains start in Bishop Auckland and most run on to Saltburn

The area we are now in is the birthplace of the railways
The first public railway ran from Darlington to Stockton On Tees the Stockton to Darlington railway it was the worlds first public railway which opened on the 27th September 1825
Although this station is not on the route of the original railway the importance of Darlington to the railway is marked here. If you look behind where the above shot was taken there is a series of panels celebrating the history of the Stockton and Darlington Railway and the fact that Darlington and Stockton on Tees were the towns where the concept of rail travel began so ultimately the towns that gave birth to the modern world

On our journey to Middlesbrough today we will be using part of the original route of the Stockton to Darlington Railway. We will be joining the original route just east of Dinsdale and leaving it just east of Allens West
Sadly as we can from the red line much of the original route is now abandoned
Also do bear in mind these panels were erected in 1977 and some of the lines shown as still been in use on this map are now longer in use in 2014

Locomotion the Stockton and Darlington first Locomotive that pulled the first train on its opening day. Locomotion stood at Darlington railway station until it was removed and taken to Darlington North Road Railway Station Museum in 1975. North road station was the original Darlington station on the Stockton and Darlington railway not the station we are using

As We head away from Dinsdale it would be about at this point or just after where we join the original route of the Stockton and Darlington railway, the now abandoned trackbed will join us on the left hand side of the train

We then pass Teeside Airport. There is a railway station here that we have just passed through but I did not get a shot of it. We did not stop there in fact very little does see timetable for more details

As we run pass the airport I wonder what Edward Peace and George Stephenson would have made of the runnways and Aircraft if they had still been around to see them after all it was their work that made it all possible. How the scene at the side of the line must have changed since 1825
