A train ride from Huddersfield to Sheffield.

Huddersfield railway station. The statue of Harold Wilson can be seen in this picture.

Huddersfield railway station.

This is a very pleasent ride down the Penistone line through Honley Penistone and Barnsley. This line is mainly single line between Penistone and Barnsley and has all the feel of of a preserved railway. It has many tunnels, Viaducts, high embankments, and deep cuttings.

Operater Northern Rail journey time 1 hour 18 mins. Frequency Once an hour throughout the day.

 Penistone station.

Penistone.
This used to be a much bigger station when it also served the now closed Woodhead rail route between Sheffield and Manchester. The Woodhead route was also part of the Great Central railway from London Malarybone to Liverpool.
This railway also gets a mention on my
bus ride from Sheffield to Doncaster page
and my
bus ride from Sheffield to Barnsley

The Trans Pennine trial at Penistone.

Running alongside the Trans Pennine Trial just after Penistone station this us the former trackbed of the Woodhead rail route. Amazingly the Woodhead route was electrified in the 1950's shut to passengers beyond Penistone in the late 1960's and finally closed in the early 1980's. The line between. Penistone and Sheffield shut in the mid 1980's All that is left now is the single line we are on that runs to Barnsley. When the direct route from Penistone to Sheffield shut in the mid 1980's the journey time jumped from just over 20 mins to just over 45 mins.
