Approaches to Liverpool on a train from Manchester

Getting ever closer to our destination the scene is getting more and more urban

Heading towards Edge Hill

The Original Liverpool Manchester Railway joining the main line from Crewe at Edge Hill Liverpool

As we approach Edge hill the original 1830 Liverpool to Manchester railway can be seen joining us from under the bridge that can be seen in this shot
To see more on the 1830 Liverpool to Manchester line see my
train ride from Manchester to Chester

Edge Hill Station

Passing through Edge Hill station the last station before Liverpool Lime Street our final stop. Edge Hill was opened in 1836 when the Liverpool and Machester Railway was extended down to Liverpool Lime Street which by all accounts was quite an undertaking. The original 1830 terminus for the Liverpool to Manchester railway had been Crown St to the North West of Edge Hill but it was to far from the city centre so the extension to Lime Street was built and opened in 1836

The Original Liverpool terminus at Crown St of the Liverpool to Manchester Railway opened in 1830 closed to passengers in 1836

The Original terminus of the Liverpool to Manchester Railway in Crown St opened in 1830 closed to passengers in 1836

Edge Hill station one of the oldest station still in use opened in 1836 still in use in 2013

Another view of Edge Hill station the buildings are still the original 1836 ones, this is a very historic station. This shot was taken off a different train to the one we have been on since Manchester

Starting the descent to Liverpool Lime St from Edge Hill station

We then start our descent to Liverpool Lime St through a series of cuttings and tunnels this has to be one of the most impressive approaches to any railway station anywhere, and the following pictures will demonstrate why, and why its construction was such a massive undertaking for the men who built it in the 1830's

Between Edge Hill and Liverpool Lime Street

Dropping deeper into the cuttings

Cutting dropping down into Liverpool Lime St

This place is cavernous

Looking up to the sky from the cuttings heading into Liverpool Lime Street

this shot it can be seen how deep down we now are

Deep in the Cuttings Liverpool

This must habe been an incredible undertaking in 1833 when the work on this line was started

lime st cutting

The Gradient between Edge Hill and Lime St is very steep as we can see from these shots.
When the line first opened locomotives where uncoupled from the carriges at Edge Hill and the carriges used gravity controled by brakesmen to make the rest of the journey into Lime St. When coming back out of Lime St the carriges were pulled up the incline by rope and a stationary steam engine

A tunnel on the way into Lime St

This is an incredible approach to the Liverpool's main station. There is another train runing alongside us that can be seen in this shot

A Nothern Rail train in lime Street cuttings

The train we can see then oveetakes us. These cuttings are well used to think all the trains except the Merseyrail electrics that go in and out of one of the UK'S major cities have to use this route between Edge Hill and Lime St

Lime Street cutting ftom a Norwich to Liverpool train

Hard to believe how these cuttings and tunnels were cut out of solid rock

Cutting through Rock

Deeper and deeper
