Meadowhall Station

Less than a minute later arriving at Meadowhall station. Meadowhall is a massive shopping centre in Sheffield. At this point we leave the former Midland Main line which use to run from London St Pancras to Glasgow. The Midland Main line continues to Swinton as the main line to Doncaster and Wakefield Westgate and York. At Manners just after Swinton the Midland Mainline used to vere off to the left and make its way to Darton (look out for Darton further down this page) but is now dissused. A modern area of office blocks etc now sits on the old trackbed and at Manners there is very little sign of the old Midland Mainline. I do remember traveling over this strech of now closed line between Manners and Darton in my younger days.

This really will be rare footage as there are not any trains that pass through Barnsley not scheduled to stop there.

The route as far as Barnsley also gets a mention in my train ride from Huddersfield to Sheffield.

Darton

Passing through Darton this is where the former Midland Mainline appears again the dissused trackbed comes in from the right just to the south of Darton station. In 2012 there was at least 1 dissused remnant of a semaphore signal that can be just made out in this shot. From the appearence and width of the trackbed this was obviously once a major junction. From here all the way to Leeds we are following the Midland Mainline and in places this railway was obviously something much grander than it is today. At one time the Thames Clyde Express the night sleeper from London St Pancras to Glasgow the boat trains heading from London to Heysham Sea Terminal to connect with the boats to Ireland all passed this way.

Approaching Wakefield Kirkgate Passing under the line into Wakefield Westgate.

Approaching Wakefield Kirkgate at this point we are passing under the line into Wakefield Westgate. The section of line we are on now approaching Wakefield Kirkgate from the south has been a four track section since Horbury on the outskirts of Wakefield. This is a very common feature on the Midland Mainline particulary further south and is a sure sign this was once a major railway line.

To visit the world's best video taken leaving Wakefield Kirkgate heading south as far as Horbury off a Leeds to Sheffield train click here this covers the whole of the four line section of railway as described above.

Wakefield Kirkgate station. This was Once a much grander station then it is today. For many years it has been very dilapidated but just recently (2012) work seems to have started on correcting this.

Approaching Leeds

Approaching Leeds. This section of line has freight depots along its length where these are the width of the trackbed is enormous as there are many tracks most still in use and as we get closer to Leeds we enter a wide cutting that obviously once carried more tracks than the two lines of today this shot gives an impression of this again as on many parts of this journey the approach to Leeds was once much grander than it is today.
