Mill engines like this powered the textile industry for over a century.
In time, advances in technology improved them. Here the engine drove the mill using gear wheels. If a tooth broke, the whole mill stopped.
Later engines drove the mills using a series of ropes around the flywheel. When a rope broke, only a small part of the factory was affected and production could continue
