Airborne Early Warning Aeroplane
Avro Shackleton AEW2
The Avro Shackleton Maritime Reconnaissance aeroplane evolved from the Lancaster Bomber it first flew in 1949
Capable of flying up to 24 hours it was equipped with bunk beds a galley and a chemical toilet
In 1972 B Squadron was reformed to become the RAF airborne early warning role (AEW).
AEW use radar to locate aircraft or missiles that cannot be detected by land or ship radar and help to co-ordinate a response
The squadron used modified Shackleton aircraft while the British Aerospace AEW3 was developed.
This was intended to be a short term measure but bacause of delays in the Nimrod programme the Shackleton stayed in service until the 1st of July 1991
The American Boeing E3A Sentry AEW was bought instead of the Nimrod

This aircraft was built by Avro at Woodford near Stockport in 1954
It served as a maritime reconnaissance (MR2) Shackleton with RAF 42 205 210 and 229 squadrens
In 1972 it was converted int an AEW aircraft and named Dougal
All 8 squadron Shackletons were named after Magic Roundabout or Herb Garden characters
