Mock up Roman latrines Museum of Science and Industry Manchester

Once down the steps the smell and sounds give it all away this is about Toilets, sewage disposal, keeping clean and water supply. Some of the things here show how hard and unpleasant this must have been in the past and make you realise how lucky we are.
The above picture is a mock up of a Latrine block at a Roman Fort, The best preseved example of one of these can be found at Housesteads on Hadrians Wall in Northumberland. The Romans did seem to understand the importance of diposing of sewage. Many roman Homes had Cess pits

Smells and sounds are in this sewer Museum of Science and Industry Manchester

After the Romans left Britain in towns and cities sewage flowed in the streets in towns and cities until the first half of the 19th century when it was realised the importance of proper sewage disposal to control disease
It was then that the sewers were started to be built under the streets to take sewage away safely. Although they are filthy horrible places they have served us well and still are serving us to this day giving us a much better quality of life
Although the sewer we walk through in Manchester underground is,a mock up the materials it is built from are from the Bridgewater Street sewer Manchester originaly built in the late 1830's

A bathroom for the wealthy in the Museum of Science and Industry Manchester

By contrast to the poor with outdoor toilets and poor washing facilities in the 19th century the wealthy started to have their water piped indoors that enabled them to have baths and showers etc and this paved the way for what most people take for granted today

The equipment above was rescued from the Moss Street public baths and wash houses in Bolton in 1988. Here there were public baths a public wash house and an establishment wash house. The establishment wash house was used by the baths to clean towels supplied to bathers and is where the equipment shown above was used. The Moss Street baths opened in 1924, The public wash house was shut in 1970 and the baths themselves by then known as Halliwell Baths shut in 1988 and the building was demolished
